The US central bank reduced interest rates on midweek, marking the second rate cut in the current year amid economic turbulence originating from the government closure and trade duties.
Decision Arrives at Unprecedented Moment for Central Bank
The decision to cut the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a range of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an unprecedented juncture for the Fed. The authority has been under significant strain to cut rates even with ongoing price increases.
Fed Statement Notes Job Market Changes
In a statement, the Fed said that the jobless rate had gone up but stays modest. “Job gains have decelerated,” the statement reads. “Inflation has risen and stays moderately high.”
Government Shutdown Hinders Central Bank’s Task
The ongoing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in US history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Collection of key financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as employees at the BLS are furloughed during the shutdown.
Information Shortage Impacts Monetary Moves
The Fed typically analyzes BLS data to assess employment trends, such as the count of new jobs added to the market and the present jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was published in early September, prior to the shutdown, and provided a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the employment scene in the previous month.
The number of jobs added to the economy in the summer month was down by over 100k since the spring, and joblessness crept up to four point three percent – the highest since three years ago.
Private Data Show Ongoing Decline
Though the bureau was scheduled to publish last month’s employment data in early October, it halted its release once the closure began. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor reported earlier this month that the private sector eliminated 32,000 jobs in last month, a indication that the employment landscape is still decelerating.
“Supply as well as demand for labor has declined quite sharply,” Fed chair the Fed chairman stated recently, which he had earlier said comes from trade and immigration measures.
Inflation Report Reveals Gradual Increase
Though BLS’s jobs report has been paused, the agency still released its price statistics for last month that indicated that costs are rising, although slowly. Prices increased 3% over the last year, the highest since January. In spring, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
