Super Typhoon Fung-wong Strikes the Philippines: Two Fatalities and Large-Scale Displacement Confirmed

The island nation has been hit hard by Intense Cyclone Fung-wong, which left a minimum of two fatalities and displaced over a million residents.

Authorities stated that the massive storm triggered widespread sudden floods, coastal inundation, landslides, and destructive gale-force winds, leading to the relocation of 1.4 million people across the country.

Extensive Damage and Emergency Operations

In Pandan, Catanduanes, one of the worst-hit regions, emergency crews recorded rising waters climbing to rooftop levels and homes being swept away by strong flows.

“Our personnel rescued fourteen people who were trapped on the roof engulfed in flood in a flood-prone area,” a disaster-mitigation officer stated. One resident frantically contacted us, saying the roof of his house was at risk of tearing away due to the storm. We saved him along with four family members.”

As of Monday morning, officials announced at least two deaths: one from drowning on the island and another who died when her house collapsed on Samar island.

Storm Intensity and Forecast

The super typhoon was downgraded to a severe tropical storm on Monday morning while moving over the Philippines’ largest island, where the capital is located.

According to meteorological authorities, the storm’s sustained wind speed dropped from 115 mph to 102 mph, though wind bursts were still reaching over 170 mph.

The cyclone is expected to continue weakening as it moves north toward Taiwan.

Relief and Assessment

The country’s emergency management agency stated efforts were ongoing to assess damage to infrastructure and homes.

Roughly thousands of shelters have been opened to temporarily house 92,000 families.

Recent Context and Environmental Factors

Fung-wong struck shortly following Typhoon Kalmaegi, which killed hundreds of lives and left dozens unaccounted for before moving on to Vietnam, causing five deaths there.

Searches for those still missing were halted on Sunday over risks to emergency personnel.

Global warming is causing cyclones stronger and common. Fung-wong is the 21st typhoon to impact the nation in 2025.

Researchers report that the frequency of super-typhoons hitting the Philippines has risen doubled over the last two decades.

Global assessments suggest that intense storms cause approximately US$3.5 million in losses for the Philippines annually.

The Philippine president issued an emergency declaration last week due to the severe damage caused by the prior typhoon and the expected damage from Fung-wong.
